Southern Star 15th April - 11/04/2017

On next Saturday evening our Premier Intermediate Footballers play their first championship match at that level against a fancied Ballingeary team at Cloughduv with a 6.30pm throw-in.

The lads have been performing well in the Division 4 Football League with their latest of all four wins coming against St Nick’s 2-14 to 1-11 last Sunday evening at home.

Plenty of challenge matches have also been played recently but we won’t know how we will fare at this higher level until the battle begins on Saturday and all support will be welcomed.

Our Junior Hurlers lost out 0-9 to 1-19 in the League to Diarmuid O’Mathunas last Wednesday evening.

The bright notes in this difficult game were Cathal Moloney at full-back, Andrew O’Connell centre back, Joe Harrington mid-field and a young Nelson McCarthy at right half forward.

Team: S Hickey, J Collins, D Corcoran, K Hurley, A O’Connell, R Moloney, D Crowley, J Harrington, A Dullea, R Long, N McCarthy, L O’Donoghue, A Burns, D O’Donovan.

The first U16A Hurling League Match between Ibane Gaels and Bandon at Timoleague last Saturday evening really livened up as a contest in the second period after a sluggish first period that left the scores at Bandon 1-2 Ibane Gaels 1-5.

There was a marked improvement in our second half performance with 1-4 scores from play against a tough Ibane Gaels team.

However, Bandon failed to dominate in second half with missed scores from placed balls that should have swung the end result in favour of the Lily Whites but the game finished evens at Ibane Gaels 01-14 Bandon 02-11.

Scorers for Bandon were Tony Quinn 1-6 (1-4 from frees), Gavin O'Brien 1-1, Charlie Long 0-2 (from frees), Niall Desmond 0-1 and Niall Daly 0-1.

Next Hurling League game is at home to Sam Maguires at tbc.

Last and by no means least, Bandon GAA Club wishes the very best of luck to or friends Bandon Rugby Club in the Munster Junior Cup Final v Young Munster on this coming weekend.
