Southern Star 27th May - 2017-05-23

Our Senior Hurling team had a useful pre-championship prep home game against Na Piarsaigh on last Saturday afternoon 0-18 to 1-15 in the RedFM Senior Hurling League.

We were without the services of the Cork Senior hurler Michael Cahalane and the Lancashire Senior Hurler Ronan Crowley but still were in charge of the game up until the very last minute when we conceded a goal to our opponents who were  hard but fair hurlers all through this lively game.

When Adam Murphy pointed from far out on the 61st  minute we thought we were safe but our opponents had other ideas and after pulling defenders Donough Lucey and James Walsh out of the centre pounced for a deserved and well worked goal.

Bandon led 0-10 to 0-6 at the break but in truth everybody thought it should have been 10-07 as their point on the stroke of half-time was dis-allowed.

There will be some concern over the fitness of our sharp-shooter Marc Sugrue  as he was withdrawn injured from proceedings on the 22 minutes.

However, this did allow Rory Fogarty a long-time injury absentee some all-important game time before the Round 1 of the Senior Hurling Championship against Blackrock in Pairc Ui Rinn on next Friday evening at 07.30 p.m. and all support will be very much appreciated.

Team: P Prendergast, P Crowley, J Walsh, P Murphy, J O’Mahony, D Lucey, J O’Donovan, C Dullea 0-2,, M McNamara, D Crowley 0-5 (4f’s), M Sugrue 0-1, J Hickey 0-5 (4fs), C O’Mahony 0-1, A Murphy 0-3, D Crowley. Subs: R Fogarty, C Hurley. E Ryan.

Well done to our Junior A Hurlers who took our near neighbours Newcestown to extra time in the Junior HURLING Championship last Tuesday week and in particular to the veteran Kieran Hurley and the much younger Andrew O’Connell and Mark O’Regan who gave fantastic displays on the night.

It was a mixed bag or results and outcomes for the under 14 hurlers at the Feile Competition held in Clonakilty last Saturday.

They played really well in the first game, winning 1-11 to 0-0 against Clon which was a major turn-around from the recent league game when we were defeated 6-10 to 1-0.

However, as a  3 team group, we had to play Ballinhassig next, and they were fresh on a first match and beat us well on a score of 1-0 to 9-4.

We may have expected that  Ballinhassig would beat Clon - and we would have qualified 2nd in group....but would you believe it Clon beat Ballinhassig by a point 2-3 to 2-2 and so we were knocked out on score difference.

Our Minor Footballers scored 1-15 but still lost out to Clonakilty after they scored 4-10 in the Non Exam League game last Friday evening.

Team. T Quinn, B Harrington ,E Hetherington, J Collins, M Laffan, P Lang, C Walsh, E mCsWEENEY, N McCarthy, N Daly, C Buttimer, S Lowney, H Lillis, B Donegan and C Long.

Lastly the under 12 Footballers scored a 9-9 to 5-6 league victory over Gabriel Ranger son this Monday evening just gone.
