It is with great regret & sadness that Bandon GAA Club have learnt of the passing of our esteemed Vice President, club member & friend Denis McCarthy RIP.
As we think of Denis, we are reminded of his exploits 50 years ago last Sunday when Bandon won the County Junior Hurling championship on 12th December 1971, defeating Ballinhassig in the county final. Denis played full-forward that day in addition to coaching the winning team.
On 10 Oct 1971, Denis played full back on the Carbery Senior football team that defeated UCC in the County Senior Football final. Denis had the unique distinction of winning two County Senior Football medals playing with two different divisions - Muskerry in 1970 while playing for native Kilmurry GAA club and Carbery in 1971 playing for Bandon GAA club.
Members of the club have fond memories of Denis travelling to matches around the county. In addition to driving the bus, he was the coach, selector, kit man and supporter. Denis's family have continued the gaelic tradition with his children and grandchilden playing, training and supporting the club. Denis contributed to the success of our club by volunteering on various committees. Denis was a long standing member of our Bingo committee and always available to help for our weekly Thursday night Bingo. While calling the Bingo numbers he is fondly remembered for "No 8 Bishopstown Bus". Denis was a great club supporter and rarely missed a Bandon GAA match whether it was an adult or underage team. He will be missed.
The officers, committee and members of Cumman Luthchleas Gael Droichead na Banndan, wish to express our deepest sympathies to his wife Mary, children Kay, Eugene, Denise, John and Trevor, grandchildren, extended McCarthy family and his many friends on their loss.
Bandon GAA club will perform a Guard of Honour at his funeral mass on Thurs 16 Nov 2021 at St. Patricks Church, Bandon, as a mark of respect to our friend Denis.
Ar dhéis lámh Dé go raibh a anam dilís.
