Football - Junior A Championship
Bandon 2-14
Castlehaven 1-07

Upon arriving at the venue a few minutes after the 03.30 throw-in the first I action I saw was our Captain Marc Sugrue being knocked over by an opponent with Marc in on goals. A free did not accrue. A free was awarded to us on the 4th minute but Marc was off target from some 50 metres out.

Barry Collins fisted over the first score on 5 mins. Donough Lucey had a wayward shot on the 6th minute just after Castlehaven also had a wide.

We were left off the hook a minute later when a diagonal ball ghosted into our defence and almost caught Pat Prendergast unawares when the ball went off the post and wide. Pat would go on to have a great game from there.

Conor Cahalane equalized on 8 mins, found the Bandon net on 13 mins after a fine team move.

Darragh Cahalane extended the lead to 4 points 1-2 to 0-1 on 15 mins and for a brief period we were under pressure.

We recorded a number of wides about this time, were denied a number of frees but never stopped trying and kept playing attacking football.

Michael Minihane was doing well in the middle, Cian OMahony began to dominate the left wing, all 3 of the Crowleys were eager for action. Barry Collins made progress along the end-line and a fisted effort went wide off the post.

On 17 mins Marc pointed a 20m free from off the ground from a very acute angle after the tireless Darren Crowley was fouled.

Cian OMahony did well to foil a 'Haven attack on the end-line and set up a blistering attack from this that resulted in a very good save by the 'Haven net-minder from a Marc Sugrue shot that was diverted over the bar.

Darren fed brother Ronan to point straight from the resultant kick-out and Philip Crowley had his first score on 21 mins after Cllr James ODonovan had done great work in the middle where he was finally over-coming the stern challenge of Alan Cahalane.

It was noticeable that Alan Johnson had drifted back to bolster the middle field at this stage.

We lost out to some odd official decisions next and were trailing 1-3 to 0-4 on 23 mins.

In a flash, Marc had soloed through and cut the deficit to the minimum on 24 mins and then Philip Crowley goaled on 25 mins after the Haven were carved open by the left legged wizard Cian OMahony.

Alan Johnson made a fantastic block down and Cian got back from his forward forays to also make good challenges.

The full back line of Cha Dullea, Peter Murphy but especially James ODonovan (fresh from the Far-East) was also prominent by now.

Marc converted a free awarded for a foul on him and then with a move that involved that whole full-back line set up Ronan to score a peach of a goal on the stroke of half time at 2-6 to 1-3.

However, that is not the full-story of the half because the score against us would surely have been greater were it not for two brilliant saves by that gentleman Pat Prendergast in the Bandon goal on the 27th and 30th minutes respectively.

Both teams exchanged wides after the re-start but Barry Collins had his second point of the night on 34 mins after being set up by Cian OMahony.

Darren Crowley richly deserved his point a minute later 2-8 to 1-4.

Pat Prendergast saved well soon-after but then we went to sleep and allowed the Haven a lot of possession but luckily they only scored two points in that purple period.

Alan Johnson was doing Trojan work around the middle and at the back.

A trade-mark run and point from Marc settled us and he converted a free awarded to Barry Collins on the 13th minute.

Peter Murphy deflected a goal bound effort on 14mins and the resultant 45m free was sent wide.

Jonathon Mulcahy and John OConnell replaced Michael Minihane and an injured Philip Crowley.

Prendo made another great save and Ronan Crowley scored a lovely point a field length move arising from that save.

Barry Collins, Jonathon Mulcahy and Marc added later points to leave the final score at 02-14 to 01-07.

P.S. Up next Barryroe in Quarter-Final in Timoleague most likely over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Team: Pat Prendergast, Cha Dullea, Peter Murphy, James Walsh, Donough Lucey, James ODonovan, Cian OMahony, Conor Sugrue, Michael Minihane, Philip Crowley 1-2, Alan Johnson, Darren Crowley 0-1, Ronan Crowley 1-2, Marc Sugrue 0-6 with 4 fs, Barry Collins 0-3. Subs: John OConnell and Jonathon Mulcahy 0-1.
