Minor Hurling

Our Minor Hurlers played out a fantastic drawn game 2-10 to 1-13 in the West Cork A final at Clonakilty last Friday evening against the combined forces of Balinascarthy/St Oliver Plunketts now operating under the banner of Owen Gaels.

We had the first point on the board inside a minute but then conceded a goal and 2 points in quick succession.  The lads did not panic and slowly but surely got on top in middle of the park where Conor Calnan and Tony Quinn were prominent. Our goalkeeper Cian Farrell found  Aidan O’Mahony with a fine puck-out on 10 minutes and he scored a great point.  He added another on 14 minutes after Conor Calnan had set him up and Olann McSweeney drew us level on 22mins when rattling the net after a lovely pass by Geremy Collins.  Olann then finished a sweeping move involving five players with a peach of a point and further points by  Conor Calnan from play and Aidan O’Mahony from a-free saw us ahead 1-6 to 1-4 at the break and looking comfortable.

Two points by the impressive Charlie Long kept us in-touch upon the re-start but for whatever reason and not for the first time we went asleep for the opening 15 minutes of the second half conceding 5 very good points to Owen Gaels in the process.  A long range effort from play by Aidan O’Mahony on 15 minutes and his free on 20 minutes drew us level at 1-9 a piece but we looked far from assured at this stage.  Next, Owen Gaels sent over 2 good points before an injury to their impressive No 6 swung the initiative back in our favour and a Garryowen into their inside line was gathered and finished brilliantly by who else only Aidan and this was followed by an Olann master-point from the side-line and we thought we were home and hosed only to be denied by a late, late equalizer and to be fair a draw was a fair result.  As of now, there is no date for the replay. Team; Cian Farrell, Cian Burke, Ben Donegan, Michael Laffan, Tony Quinn, Ciaran McCarthy, Cathal Lynch, Conor Calnan 0-2, Nelson McCarthy, Geremy Collins, Paul Lang, Aidan O’Mahony 1-6, 3f’s, 1x65mf, Charlie Long 0-2, Olann McSweeney 1-2, Barry O’Mahony.

PIFC

After the heroics of our footballers at rain-soaked Ballinacarraiga last Saturday in the quarter-final of the PIFC against Bantry , it is the turn of our hurlers this Saturday at Pairc Ui Rinn 6pm when we try to overcome a seasoned Ballymartle team in the Senior Hurling Championship.  See you there!
